A Los Angeles man was arrested after trying to steal a small training plane at Van Nuys Airport early December 18. Police say the aircraft never left the ground. Authorities identified the suspect as Ceffareno Michael Logan, a 37 year old. Investigators say he entered airport grounds around 5 a.m. and accessed a Cessna 172. The plane belonged to the L.A. Flying Academy and is commonly used for pilot training. Logan managed to start the engine and attempt a takeoff, police said. Moments later, the aircraft crashed into a hangar building. The impact damaged the plane nose and wing and left visible damage to the hangar wall. It remains unclear how Logan accessed the aircraft or whether he was a student at the flight school. The FBI joined the investigation to determine how security was breached. Logan was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and aircraft theft. He was booked into Van Nuys Jail with bail set at $150,000, proving flight school is not where shortcuts work.
