An artificial intelligence used by Heber City police wrote a report claiming an officer had turned into a frog in Heber City, Utah. The bizarre line appeared during an early January test of new AI reporting software. The error came from audio picked up on a body camera while a movie played nearby. "The body cam software and the AI report writing software picked up on the movie," Sgt. Keel told FOX 13 News. The film was Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. The department had begun testing two AI tools called Draft One and Code Four. Code Four was created by George Cheng and Dylan Nguyen, both 19 year old MIT dropouts, and launched earlier this year. Draft One generated the Disney inspired report. FOX 13 joined Sgt. Keel for a mock traffic stop to test Code Four, with Keel saying, "Hi, I’m Rick with the Heber PD," during the staged encounter. Back at the station, the AI produced a mostly normal report with timestamps, though corrections were still needed. The system works in English and Spanish and tracks tone and sentiment from conversations. Keel said writing reports usually takes 1 to 2 hours, but the AI saves him about 6 to 8 hours each week. Code Four costs about $30 per officer each month, and the department plans to keep using AI, preferably one that does not turn cops into amphibians.
