500 euro fines await Spanish drivers for reindeer decorated cars

Spanish traffic police say Christmas themed car decorations can lead to fines of up to 500 euros across Spain. The warning comes from the Dirección General de Tráfico, known as the DGT. Drivers fitting reindeer antlers to windows, red noses to grills, or garlands outside the car risk penalties. The DGT says these items can change vehicle dimensions or detach while moving. Under Article 76 of the General Traffic Regulation, cars must meet approved technical conditions. Non approved exterior decorations count as a serious offense, carrying a standard 200 euro fine. The penalty can rise to 500 euros for bulky objects or lighting that distracts other drivers. Exterior Christmas lights are fully banned, even if they appear decorative rather than functional. Interior decorations are only allowed if they do not block vision or reflect on the glass. Article 19.1 requires full visibility through all windows, mirrors, lights, and license plates. The DGT also warns that insurance may refuse coverage after a crash involving illegal decorations. In short, festive cheer is welcome, but your car cannot dress up as a reindeer.
