Bradley Bartell, a Trump voter in Wisconsin, watched his wife Camila Muñoz detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a honeymoon trip to Puerto Rico.
Muñoz, a Peruvian immigrant, overstayed her visa after pandemic travel disruptions and was arrested at the airport, then transferred to a Louisiana detention center.
The couple believed travel was safe because they are married and pursuing a green card, a decision Bartell later said, “It doesn’t make any sense.”
Despite the detention, Bartell told Newsweek on Wednesday, “I don’t regret the vote,” adding that Trump will fix this while seeking donations to cover Muñoz’s bond.
The White House says the arrest reflects existing policy. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in January that overstaying a visa makes someone subject to deportation.
The result is a political paradox playing out in real time, a voter backing the system even as it holds his wife behind bars.
