Three Capybara Pups Debut at New Orleans Zoo, Outsprint Swamp Train

Capybara pups, the world’s largest rodents, arrived July 20 at New Orleans’ Audubon Zoo to parents Turkey and Sequoia—who “are both doing great caring for their new arrivals.” Trending searches ask, “What do baby capybaras eat?” and “How soon do zoo babies walk?” The zoo notes, “Don’t let those little legs fool you, capybara pups are born ready to explore.”
Unlike typical zoo debuts, these newborn capybaras immediately began roaming and nibbling vegetation within four days, prompting “Can capybara pups swim?” and “How long do newborn capybaras stay hidden?” queries. Guests sometimes glimpse them from the Swamp Train, sparking visions of rodent-powered transit and a capybara-led parade through the bayou.
Capybara pups at Audubon Zoo are already exploring—and reportedly visible from the Swamp Train—despite being just days old and small enough to escape through a single slice of lettuce.
