Karnataka School's 21-Student Exodus Over Dalit Cook Appointment

In Homma village, Karnataka, 21 out of 22 students withdrew from the Government Higher Primary School following the appointment of Nanjamma, a Dalit woman, as head cook. Parents cited 'poor quality teaching,' but officials suspect caste bias. 'Some parents may have had a problem with the cook’s caste,' noted Zilla Panchayat CEO Mona Roat.
Despite officials' efforts, only eight students re-enrolled, leaving the school with two teachers and one student. The remaining student's parents have also requested a transfer. Authorities promise improved teaching staff and facilities to address the situation.
The school, once bustling with 22 students, now stands nearly empty, a stark testament to the enduring grip of caste discrimination in modern India.
