An opossum halted Mackinac Bridge staff and a Mackinac County sheriff’s deputy on May 29 after scurrying onto the 5-mile bridge connecting Michigan’s peninsulas. The marsupial was safely caged and returned to Mackinaw City, with bridge officials calling it an “occasional visitor.”

Bridge workers and a sheriff’s deputy quickly responded after the opossum’s surprise appearance, highlighting the bridge’s growing reputation for wild animal crossings. Just last week, a family of Canada geese toured the causeway, prompting staff to joke about “bridge wildlife tours.”

The Mackinac Bridge Authority regularly encounters wildlife, including birds and geese, but opossum rescues are rare on the 5-mile span.
