Unknown Soldier flame Paris: On August 5, one man turned the Arc de Triomphe’s sacred fire into a makeshift lighter, sparking the viral query, "Is it illegal to light cigarettes from memorials?" alongside "Arc de Triomphe flame rules." Arrested by Paris police, his act was filmed by a Latvian tourist, and officials called it “indecent and pathetic.”

After the Arc’s flame met a cigarette, French officials invoked laws on "defiling memorials," while "What happens at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?" and "Can tourists film arrests in France?" trended. The man, described as calm and sober, left tourists wondering if remembrance can double as a smoke break—"This flame does not light a cigarette, it burns for the sacrifice of millions of our soldiers," scolded Minister Miralles.

A Latvian tourist’s video of the act, filmed at precisely 19:43 on August 4, made the Unknown Soldier’s flame the most controversial lighter in Parisian history.
