Cascade Mountain hikers, under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms, sparked a rescue on May 24 after declaring their companion dead. The forest ranger found the hikers in an altered mental state near Lake Placid, New York, turning a serious call into a surreal misadventure.

No one was injured, but the hikers’ 911 call led to a paramedic parade up the 5.6-mile Cascade Mountain trail after their “dead” friend turned out to be alive. Mushroom confusion left authorities baffled and hikers with the ultimate Adirondack campfire story.

Cascade Mountain, site of the confusion, is the 36th tallest Adirondack High Peak at 4,098 feet.
