DIY SOS Volunteers Build Youth Club in 8 Days, Leave Beverley Buzzing

DIY SOS volunteers and Beverley locals transformed a field into a youth club for 90 kids in just 8 days, led by presenter Nick Knowles and 80-year-old John Whelan. Helpers traveled from London, Devon, and Scotland, calling it a “miracle build” and celebrating community spirit. “I’m buzzing just watching it all happen,” said Whelan, who swept floors and cheered joiners on.
The new Cherry Tree Youth Club now boasts an outdoor gym, communal space, kitchen, meeting room, and cycle path—built from scratch by over 200 volunteers. “Superhuman effort from incredibly talented people,” said designer Gabrielle Blackman, as friendships and even jobs blossomed amid the whirlwind construction and spontaneous celebrations.
Before the build, youth club members met in a gazebo in a Beverley park since 2020—now, 90 young people a week have a permanent home thanks to eight days of non-stop teamwork and “an explosion of good stuff.”
