Cinnamons Restaurant Shut Down After £35,000 Curry Odour Battle

Cinnamons restaurant in Wheatley, Oxfordshire, closed after two decades when a £35,000 extractor failed to stop curry odour complaints, resulting in a £25,000 court fine. Owner Shirazul Hoque called the closure “a big punch in the gut” for the beloved Bangladeshi eatery.
Despite spending £35,000 on ventilation, Cinnamons could not afford a new £50,000 system and faced repeated abatement notices. The council prosecuted, forcing closure and making chefs homeless, as one review mourned: “We are so lucky to have this restaurant.”
Cinnamons won a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award in 2021, ranking it among the top 10% of restaurants worldwide—just before the first odour complaint arrived.
